ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University men's hockey team (6-12-5 OUA) lost a heartbreaker in double OT by the score of 4-3 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves (5-12-4 OUA) Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Lakehead opened the scoring 8:13 into the opening period as Dylan Butler and Jake Wright setup Sam Schutt for his fourth goal of the season.
The Badgers answered with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Ryan Purvis (Orillia, ON) setup
Chris Maniccia (St. Catharines, ON) who registered his seventh goal of the campaign 1:26 into the second period. At the midway mark of the second,
Sammy Banga (Windsor, ON) beat Lakehead starter Devin Green with Maniccia and
Skylar Pacheco (Kitimat, BC) adding the assists.
That lead would be short lived as Lakehead's Jake Ringuette tied it 2-2 just 11 seconds later with a powerplay marker. Billy Jenkins and Jay Gilbert collected the assists.
Seven and a half minutes into the third period, Brock would regain the one-goal lead as
Dan Tanel (Mississauga, ON) and Maniccia setup
Patrick Volpe (Burlington, ON) for his first goal of the season.
Once again, Lakehead quickly answered to tie it 3-3 with a goal from Wright just 42 seconds later at 8:16.
After nothing was solved in the first overtime, it went to a 3 on 3 double OT. 2:34 into the second overtime, Jenkins and Kelin Ainsworth setup Linden Springer in the slot, who buried a shot past Brock starter
Clint Windsor (Hamilton, ON) for the game winner.
Windsor registered 39 saves in the loss while the Thunderwolves Devin Green collected 29 saves for the victory.
The Badgers return to action January 27th at 7:15pm when they host the Guelph Gryphons at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
