ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University men's volleyball team fell to the No. 10 ranked Guelph Gryphons by the score of 3-1 (27-25, 21-25, 16-25, 18-25) Friday night in front of the largest crowd in school history in their return to OUA volleyball for the first time in 15 years.
In the first set Guelph rallied back from a five-point deficit, before the Badgers answered with a solo block from rookie setter
Marcelo Correa (Indaiatuba, Brazil) on set point to take game one 27-25.
Set two was back and forth with Guelph taking it 25-21. In games three and four Brock played hard but it was the nationally ranked Gryphons win both sets for their sixth victory of the season.
Brock's offense was led by
Timmy Spisar (Brampton, ON) who finished with 12 kills and eight digs.
Matthew Ragogna (Tottenham, ON) registered 10 kills and four digs while
John Elgersma (Wellandport, ON) added seven kills. Correa collected 34 assists and eight digs in the loss.
Zachary Newman led the Gryphons with 16 kills and six digs. Also in double digits were Kendrick Kerr and Gregory Olejnik who added 10 kills each. Setter Samuel Kloke contributed with 42 assists and six digs in the victory.
For the match, Brock had a .157 hitting percentage adding 39 kills with 23 errors on 102 attempts. Guelph finished with 52 kills with 19 errors on 105 attempts for a .314 hitting percentage.
The Badgers return to action Saturday night at 8pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
