ST. CATHARINES, ON - The No. 7 ranked Brock University men's basketball team fell to the No. 5 ranked McMaster Marauders by the score of 80-69 in front of a crowd of 2,673 at the Meridian Centre Wednesday night.
Prior to the game, Brock honoured their graduating senior class which included
Zachary Angelini (Hamilton, ON),
Matt Marshall (Burlington, ON),
Nathaniel Gardner (Ajax, ON) and student therapist Omer Suhrawardy.
Brock held a 20-17 lead after one quarter and found themselves down 37-34 at the half. In the third quarter, the two teams played an even 10 minutes with McMaster holding a 58-54 lead after three quarters.
In the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, McMaster put together a 7-2 run, leading 65-56 with 6:05 left in regulation. Brock rallied to bring it within five, 70-65, with three minutes left in the game. The Marauders closed out the contest with a 10-4 run to split the regular season series.
The Badgers were led by
Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) who recorded a season high 36 points and 12 rebounds going 13-for-19 from the field and a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Johneil Simpson (Toronto, ON) contributed with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. while Marshall added eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
McMaster had three players in double figures led by Leon Alexander who registered 28 points and seven rebounds assists. Rohan Boney collected 16 points and nine boards, while Aaron Redpath chipped in with 14 points.
For the game, the Badgers shot 35.3% (24-for-68) from the field, 15.4% (2-for-13) from beyond the arc and 95.0% (19-for-20) from the free charity stripe. McMaster went 29-for-66 (43.9%) from the floor, 3-for-16 (18.8%) from long range and 19-for-32 (59.4%) from the free throw line. The Marauders forced the Badgers to turn the ball over 21 times, leading to a 21-8 margin in points off turnovers.
Brock closes out the regular season Saturday on the road versus the Guelph Gryphons and will host a playoff game next week.
