TORONTO - The Brock University women's basketball team dropped a 74-67 decision to the No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
After jumping out to an early 10-3 run, the Badgers held onto an 18-16 lead after one quarter. Brock put together a 15-2 early in the second quarter to take a 33-20 lead with 4:31 left in the half. Brock led 39-30 after 20 minutes.
Ryerson opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run, tying the game 41-41 with six minutes left in the quarter. The Rams closed out the third with a 9-2 run to take a 54-49 lead after three quarters.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Brock's Tatti knocked down a three to tie the game 60-60, but it was the Rams Keneca Pingue-Giles answering with a three of her own to go up 63-60. In the final four minutes, the Badgers offense made just two field goals, as they lost for the fourth time in their last six games.
Brock had all five players in double figures led by
Kate Harpur (NOTL, ON) who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, ON) contributed with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Jenalyn Yumol (London, ON) was close to a triple-double finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Kira Cornelissen (Aylmer, ON) and
Kayla Santilli (Brantford, ON) chipped in with 10 points each in the loss.
Ryerson's Pingue-Giles led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Mariah Nunes added 18 points, five rebounds and five assists while Sofia Paska finished with the double-double adding 14 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
The Badgers shot 35.7% (25-for-70) from the field, 31.6% (6-for-19) from beyond the arc and 55.0% (11-for-20) from the free throw line. Ryerson went 27-for-72 (37.5%) from the floor, 5-for-16 (31.3%) from long range and 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the charity stripe.
The Badgers return to action Friday, February 5th at 6pm when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on the road.
