ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University women's basketball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers by the score of 75-67 Saturday night on the road.
Brock opened the game with a 25-6 run and led by 18 after one quarter, In the second quarter, Nipissing answered back putting together a 19-6 run, and trailed the Badgers 37-30 at the half.
The Lakers outscored Brock 17-13 in the third quarter as Brock held onto a three point lead after 30 minutes 50-47.
In the final quarter, Brock jumped out to a 55-49 lead and then got two clutch three-pointers from
Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, ON) and
Baelie Campbell (Halifax, NS) on route to the seven-point road win.
The Badgers had four starters in double figures led by
Kira Cornelissen (Aylmer, ON) who recorded 26 points and nine rebounders. Tatti registered 15 points, six rebounds and six assists while
Bridget Atkinson (Welland, ON) and Campbell chipped in with 10 points each.
Leading the Lakers were Michaela Branker and Claire Abbott who added 20 and 16 points respectively in the loss.
The Badgers shot 43.4% (23-for-53) from the field 40.0% (4-for-10) from beyond the arc and 64.1% (25-for-39) from the charity stripe. Nipissing went 23-for-59 (39.0%) from the floor including 2-for-17 (11.8%) from long range and 19-for-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line.
The Badgers return to action January 13th and 14th when they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in two key OUA Central Division matchups.
