The number one seeded Brock Badgers headed into OUA championship weekend in good shape. They had the top seed and a bye into the quarterfinals where they meet the 9th seeded Waterloo Warriors.
Â
The Warriors finished last in the regular season but brought their best to the Badgers following an earlier upset against the Ryerson Rams.
Â
The Badgers came into the game the clear-cut favourite but struggled to capitalise on early opportunities. The Badgers left the bases loaded in the first inning and were only able to cash one run.
Â
Derek Zwolinski, the starter for the Badgers had another tough luck start. Derek, who has pitched well all season brought another strong performance to the mound. However he was not supported by his offense who left runners on base and could only stake Zwolinski to a 2-0 lead. From then on the Warriors with some timely hitting and a keen eye at the plate were able to rally finding holes in the Badgers defense.
Â
In the 5th the Warriors mounted their attack. Freshman
Jacob Ebbs came in with the bases loaded and 2 outs looking to keep the game tied at two but struggled to find the zone for the Badgers. The Brock side was able to escape with limited damage and trailing 4-2.
Â
Next out of the pen was
Jake Near who pitched well for the Badger side but allowed a few Warrior base runners and surrender another Waterloo run. As the Warriors were itching closer to a large upset, coach Mark LePage brought in his ace to calm down the Waterloo bats.
Chase Porter was excellent in his two innings in relief looking unhittable.
Â
In the end the Badgers could not get a sustained rally going late as a combination of arms out of the Waterloo pen were able to keep the Brock line up off balance. Gade, the winning pitcher for the Warriors in the earlier upset of the Ryerson Rams, was the one to come and close the door for the Warriors. A 5-3 final in favour of the Warriors see's the 9th seeded team move onto the Semi-finals in Ajax.
Â
For the Badgers, this was not how the weekend was supposed to play out with a bye to the Quarters and an early knockout of their rival the Western Mustangs all things pointed to a deep run for the Brock side. However, in single elimination baseball anything can happen and on this day the Badgers came up short.
