Brock women's basketball falls to Thunderbirds 59-56

The Brock University women's basketball team dropped a 59-56 decision to the Algoma Thunderbirds Friday night on the road. With the loss, Brock falls to 4-9 in the regular season while Algoma improves to 2-11.

Brock trailed Algoma 8-4 in the opening four minutes, before going on a 20-3 run, to close out the first quarter with a 24-11 lead. Brock extended that lead to 34-18 with 32:53 left in the second quarter. Algoma rallied back with a 12-2 run to make it a six point game at the half, 36-30.

The Thunderbird would bring the Brock lead down to three points, 48-45 after three quarters, and closed out the game with two clutch free throws in the dying seconds by Karina Cole to secure the victory.

The Badgers had three players in double figures led by Baelie Campbell who registered 16 points and six rebounds. Courtney Mcpherson collected 14 points and eight rebounds while Stephanie Findlay chipped in with 12 points and five boards.

Leading Algoma was Karina Cole who added a game high 19 points and Sydney Resch who collected 14 points in the victory.

For the game, Brock shot 33.3% (19-57) from the field, 17.6% (3-17) from three-point range and 71.4% (15-21) from the free throw line. Algoma went 20-66 (30.3%) from the floor, 6-20 (30.0%) from beyond the arc and 13-19 (68.4%) from the charity stripe.

The Badgers close out the weekend series against the Thunderbirds Saturday night at 6pm in Sault Ste. Marie.
