An early-season matchup of undefeated schools takes place in St. Catharines on Friday. The Brock men's basketball team hosts the McMaster Marauders for lead of the OUA West Division. Brock and McMaster are some of the strongest teams in points and rebounds to start the season. The Badgers have dedicated this as the Jason Pearson Memorial game, which pays tribute to Pearson, a former student-athlete who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2001.
Location: Bob Davis Gymnasium Time: 8 p.m.
ABOUT THE BADGERS (2-0): Badgers senior guard Johneil Simpson is within striking distance of Gord Wood on the all-time Brock men's basketball scoring leaders. Simpson needs 30 points to reach No. 7 among the all-time leaders. If McMaster can defend Simpson (22.5 points per game), then they'll have to deal with Cassidy Ryan (16.5), Tyler Brown (14) and Noah LaPierre (10). The coaching staff was already handing out scouting reports on McMaster to their players following their win against Guelph on Oct. 27. "McMaster is very dynamic. They're small, but they're tough. They're athletic and they get out to shoot a lot of threes," said head coach Madhav Trivedi. "We have to start with matching their intensity right from the get go. Any moment we don't, they're going to jump all over us. We could find ourselves in a long battle.
ABOUT THE MARAUDERS (2-0): Brock will be tasked with shutting down McMaster seniors Connor Gilmore, who currently ranks third in rebounds per game (9.5) and fourth in points per game (26), and David McCulloch who is eighth in ppg (21). The Marauders opened the season with a 93-75 win over Waterloo and 95-67 victory versus Windsor. Gilmore scored 28 points and pulled down 12 boards to open the conference season with a double-double in his first OUA start since February 2017 after spending a year away from the game. McMaster is motivated to outperform their 11-14 record from last season.
