Badgers hold on for 101-100 win in Guelph

Box Score

The Brock men's basketball team held on narrowly defeated the Guelph Gryphons 101-100 on the road Wednesday.

Tyler Brown led the charge against Guelph, recording 38 minutes, scoring 22 points to go along with his three rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Johneil Simpson scored 16 points, which moved him past former Badger Ryan Dudley into No. 6 among Brock men's basketball all-time scoring leaders with a total of 2,637 points. He's 89 points away from catching No. 5 Kevin Stienstra.

Cassidy Ryan posted 21 points, three rebounds and an assist, while Daniel Cayer finished with a double-double worthy of 11 points and 14 rebounds.

From the opening tip this game was going to be a shootout, high scoring offences going against each other with the team who gets the one extra defensive stop most likely coming out on top.

In the first quarter, the Gryphons got the better of the chances as they pulled ahead 25-22.

The Badgers flipped it around in the second as they continued to score efficiently and keep pace with the Gryphons.  Going into the second half Brock trimmed Guelph's lead to just two points, trailing 44-42.

The high-powered offences went at it once again in the third with the game still very much on the line. Although the rebounding numbers were lower than other games, both the Badgers and Gryphons capitalized on many of their opportunities and it led to another 20-plus point quarter for the Badgers and Gryphons, and a 73-72 Gryphons' lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Brock and Guelph stayed within eight points of each other and thanks to a three-pointer by Tyler Brown, and an extra free throw, Brock held on to take the close victory and increase their win streak.

Moving forward Brock will look to hold on to the positive momentum they've gained and move even closer to first in their division as they take on the Windsor Lancers on Saturday evening in Windsor.
