Lions capitalize on power play to slip by Badgers

The York Lions capitalized on the power play to punish the Brock Badgers by a score of 3-2 to earn their first win of the OUA men's hockey season at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Friday.

The Badgers dropped to 1-2.

"We scored some power-play goals, but we gave up some too," said head coach Marty Williamson. "We're not hitting on all cylinders. Not a bad effort, or a bad game, we just got to keep building."

Brock outshot York 31-25, but couldn't beat York goalie Mack Shields despite heavy pressure, including a shot which hit the post, in the dying minutes of the game.

"We didn't do too bad, but I thought we screwed up on the one neutral-zone rush where we ended up giving up that goal," said Williamson. "Our blunders are costing us right now. Overall, we're just off so that's what keeps me pretty positive that there's enough good things out there that we're going to be okay."

Connor Walters opened the scoring at 4:30 before York scored back-to-back goals with the man advantage. Adam Berg tied the game up midway through the second.

Skylar Pacheco, Christian Girhiny, Johnny Schaefer and Jared Marino each recorded an assist. Goalie Mario Cavaliere made 22 saves.

For York, Morgan Messenger and Dylan Riley each contributed a goal.

"Last year, when we set a school record for wins, you automatically think you're good and you sometimes forget how much hard work it is to be good," added Williamson. "We're not quite operating at 100 per cent. We're not far off, but to do what we did last year we need to be 100 per cent."

Up next, the Badgers (1-2) travel to east to play the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres Patriotes (1-2) for a pair of games on Oct. 18 and 19.
