Goalkeeper Marilena Spagnolo made 13 saves and the Brock women's soccer team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 at Brock Alumni Field on Sunday.
"Marilena is a weapon. She's punting the ball 70-80 yards, but you've got to be fit to get up there and get on the end of them," said assistant coach John DiPasquale. "The defence doesn't like those, because you have to head that ball, so they're backing up and it's a tough ball to deal with."
It was Spagnolo's seventh clean sheet of the season.
"She's an intense goalkeeper. Her work rate is second to none," added Pasquale. "She loves to train, so you can see it on the field. She has a settling effect on the team. In soccer, if a team doesn't trust their goalie, they back into them, we're fortunate to keep a higher line and we allow that space between out defence and her, which is a little longer than normal, but that gives us such an edge. We can shrink space in other areas of the field and that's where we're going to get that pressure."
Adrianna Belfer-Marin, who posted three shots, set the stone for the game by scoring just four minutes into the match.
In the second, Samantha Bayer netted a goal at the 68th minute.
"Sam, her moves are huge. Her getting the ball and holding it allows time and allows us to move up the field. She's really important to our team that way," said DiPasquale. "She works hard and doesn't say boo. The trust our team has in each other is the difference maker, and the overall team spirit. It's positive. If somebody makes a mistake they're helping out. Whether they're playing or not playing, and that's great."
Cassandra Stirpe tallied three shots, while Bayer and Ivana Kanisek registered two shots. Melanie Schouten also added a shot.
