The Brock women's hockey team captured an critical victory on Thursday.
Annie Berg scored a shorthanded goal and the Badgers edged the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 on Jr. Badgers Night at Seymour-Hannah Arena.
"This win is huge for us," said goaltender Jensen Murphy, who made 27 saves. "We've been through some adversity recently, but today we really came together as a team and supported each other the whole game."
After being shut out on the road against Queen's on Nov. 16, the Badgers were 1-3 so far in the month of November.
"I think this is the turning point for us as a team and the result tonight really displayed that," added Murphy.
After a scoreless first period, the Warriors scored just two minutes into second. The Badgers replied when first-year forward Sarah Brooks found the back of the net at 18:20.
Berg scored an unassisted short-handed goal at the 14-minute mark of the third.
"It was probably one of the nicest goals I've scored," said Berg. "I was putting pressure on the girl on the point, blocked the shot and went down on a breakaway. I faked like I was going backhand, then stopped pulled it back to my forehand and put it above the goalies glove."
The goal put Brock ahead 2-1 and forced Waterloo to pull their goalie when Mikayla Flanagan scored an empty netter, which would stand as the winner as the Warriors scored with five minutes remaining.
Niamh Haughey notched an assist on Flanagan's goal.
"The takeaway from this game is how well our defence and forwards supported each other all over the rink," said head coach Margot Page.
Brock outshot Waterloo 31-29.
Brock hosted a Jr. Badgers Night for young fans to come out to cheer on their favourite Badgers, meet the players, and included activities such face painting.
Up next, the Badgers (4-6) visit the Guelph Gryphons (5-5) on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
