The Brock men's hockey team suffered their first loss of the OUA playoffs at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Wednesday.
Western scored twice in the third period to win Game 1 by a score of 3-2 in the best-of-three OUA West semifinal series.
Game 2 is in London, Ontario on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
"We started a little slow, but I thought we played good in the second and third," said head coach Marty Williamson. "Unfortunately, a penalty changed momentum. We need to play a full 60 minutes on Friday and take advantage of our chances."
Western opened the scoring at 3:31 of the first period on a goal by Spenser Cobbold.
Momentum shifted after Western's Mitchell Fitzmorris was tossed near the end of the first period for checking Brock's leading scorer, Ryan Burton, from behind.
The Badgers capitalized on the man-advantage when Tyler Rollo found the back of the net to open the second, and six minutes later Connor Brown gave Brock the lead.
Skylar Pacheco, Ethan Spaxman, Jared Marino and Adam Berg each tallied an assist.
In the third, Kyle Petit tied the game up on a Mustangs' power play and Cordell James netted the game winner at 15:21.
Brock outshot Western 31-27 as Badgers netminder Logan Thompson made 24 saves. Western goalie Luke Peresinni kicked out 29 shots.
