Preview (Jan. 23-26): Badgers' offence revving up for home stretch

Senior setter Emily Armstrong and the No. 9 Brock Women's Volleyball team host the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.

The No. 9 Brock women's volleyball team opens a home-and-home series with the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The rally begins at 2 p.m. at Bob Davis Gymnasium. Tickets

Next week, it will be Brock's turn to travel to McMaster on Friday, Jan. 31.

Brock sits in second place in the division and holds the highest winning percentage in the OUA West (.727).

The Badgers look to gain separation from McMaster and Waterloo who are chasing them in standings.

Coincidentally, the Marauders (Jan. 26) and Warriors (Feb. 7) are the Badgers' last two regular season home game opponents.

The Badgers' offence rates as one of the top teams in the league as they are Top 5 among kills per set, points per set and hitting percentage.

"I believe that teams haven't seen our full potential as an offence," said senior setter Emily Armstrong. "We've done what we needed to do to get the job done and be in the position we are now. We will be tested down the stretch, and when the pressure is high I believe we will perform."

Brock's formidable attack is generated by Armstrong and sophomore Sara Rohr. They're a big reason why the Badgers' lead the league in assists per set (11.25).

"Many teams are lucky to have one or two big attackers, yet every one of our attackers can be a go-to player on any given night," said Armstrong. "I believe that really gives us an edge on our opponents."

Brock's kill leaders include Laura Condotta, Darby Taylor, Grace Pyatt, Christina Jovetic and Gigi Markotic.

Tickets for Sunday's game can be found here.

Men's Basketball - On Friday, Jan. 24, the Badgers (8-6) host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (Tickets) for their annual Jason Pearson Memorial Game before welcoming the Queen's Gaels (Tickets) on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Prior to tipoff versus Ontario Tech, Brock will honour former Badger Jason Pearson, a student-athlete who tragically lost his life in 2001. The Jason Pearson Memorial scholarship is presented to a member of the Brock Badgers men's basketball team. In addition to their athletic and academic ability, the recipient exhibits the same warmth of personality, concern for others and positive attitude for life as did Jason Pearson.

Men's Hockey - The Badgers (12-10) have an opportunity to leapfrog the Windsor Lancers in the OUA West when they host the last-place York Lions (5-17) during their second last regular season home game at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7:15 p.m. Brock is 1-1 versus York this season as both games have been decided by a goal. The Badgers then travel to Windsor for a game on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Lancers recently forfeited two wins versus Laurier and Waterloo at the beginning of 2020 for dressing an ineligible player. Tickets

Men's Volleyball - Brock (5-6) hosts No. 3 McMaster (9-1) on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. The Badgers came out of the break by splitting a 1-1 homestand versus Trent (3-0) and Ryerson (0-3) last weekend. Outside hitter Logan House is fifth in the OUA with 3.44 kills per set and hitting percentage (.331) after posting a total of 27 kills in his last two games. House has recorded double digit kill totals in all but two matches this season. Nanle Yusuf notched 0.43 service aces per set. Tickets

Women's Basketball - No. 9 Brock (11-3) will play back-to-back homes games when they host a pair of opponents from the OUA East: Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (Jan. 24; Tickets) and No. 6 Queen's Gaels (Jan. 25; Tickets). Both games start at 6 p.m. It will be the first time Brock faces Ontario Tech in women's basketball as the Ridgebacks compete during their inaugural season. Guard Melissa Tatti leads the league in assists (6.9) and second in points per game (17).

Women's Hockey - The Badgers (10-7) carry their four-game winning streak on the road when they visit the No. 8 York Lions (12-7) at Canlan Ice Sports Arena on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2:15 p.m. In their previous meeting, Brock lost 2-0 at home to York on Oct. 31. Senior forward Annie Berg is second in the OUA with 12 assists and goalie Jensen Murphy is second in the league with a .943 save percentage and third with a 1.73 goals against average. Watch
