Badgers skate by Gryphons, look to face Rams Saturday

Annie Berg scored two goals and the Brock women's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Jan. 30.

The Badgers snag three crucial points as they slide past the Gryphons into fifth place in the OUA standings with a record of 11-8.

Goaltender Jensen Murphy made 34 saves for the win; Brock replied with 29 shots on Guelph's Aurore Beaulieu.

"We really like the way we started the game," said head coach Margot Page. "Our forecheck was relentless and we really worked hard to get to pucks and win battles. This was a win we needed to keep the playoffs in our sights."

Berg opened the scoring on a wrist shot during a mini breakaway just under two minutes into the game.

Berg shootsGuelph scored a funky goal when the puck flew straight up and came straight down behind Murphy.

Midway through the second period, Cassidy Maplethorpe scored the go-ahead goal. Morgan Dezell and Kaitlyn Colonna each secured an assist on the goal.

Guelph pulled Beaulieu late in the game to enhance their power play, however Murphy stood tall and Berg plunked home an empty netter to seal the deal for Brock.

Brock is currently jousting for playoff positioning with Guelph and Ryerson in the thick of the standings.

Up next, the Badgers (11-8) will enjoy a rest day before catching the Ryerson Rams on the second leg of a back-to-back. Coincidentally, Ryerson will play Guelph in Toronto on Friday before traveling to St. Catharines to meet the Badgers for a Saturday, Feb. 1 match at Seymour-Hannah Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. Tickets are here.
