First-year forward Christian Girhiny scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Brock men's hockey team edged the Guelph Gryphons 4-3 at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Jan. 9.
Both teams traded chances in extra time before Girhiny tactically carried the puck out of Brock's zone.
"It started with a full D-zone breakout and we just had good movement and possession," said Girhiny. "Dexter Weber did a good job of keeping the puck around the net and Frankie Pucci was coming off from a change and when he got that puck he had his head up. I was lucky no one was watching me when it went in. It was a very good game for us and I'm happy we got the two points."
It was Girhiny and the Badgers' first win of 2020, which also snapped a three-game losing skid.
"We were a little stronger defensively and found a way to score tonight," said head coach Marty Williamson. "Christian has a wonderful feel for the game. His eyes are always looking to make plays and his hockey IQ is real good."
Connor Brown, Ayden MacDonald and Brayden Stortz each added goals for Brock. Goaltender Mario Culina made 42 saves to earn his first win in between the pipes as a Badger.
Brock built a two-goal lead early in the second before Guelph's Ryan Da Silva, Todd Winder and Mikkel Aagaard scored three consecutive goals to take the lead.
The Badgers trailed 3-2 midway through the third period before Brown, who also plays on the Brock men's lacrosse team, batted the puck out of the air and into the back of the net to tie the game up.
Brown finished with two assists, while Stortz, Pucci, MacDonald, Weber, Tyler Rollo and Ryan Burton each recorded a helper.
For Guelph, Aagaard finished with a goal and an assist, Ted Nichol tallied three assists while goalie Brendan Cregan faced 43 shots in the loss.
Up next, the Badgers (11-8-1-0) visit the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
