Adam Berg and Jordan Maletta each scored two goals and the Brock Badgers opened the OUA men's hockey playoffs with a 6-3 win over the Windsor Lancers in Game 1 at the Capri Pizzeria Rec Complex in Windsor on Wednesday.
"Game 1 of any series is always one of the most intense, we wanted to make sure we had a strong start," said Berg. "Once we got a couple goals we just started to roll. It was great to see so many guys step up in different ways to help get the win."
The best-of-three series shifts to St. Catharines where the Badgers host Game 2 on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7:15 p.m. at Seymour-Hannah Arena. Tickets are available here.
"It was a game and we fought for every inch," said head coach Marty Williamson. "I'm real proud of the guys tonight. They brought great energy."
Goaltender Mario Culina made 29 saves while Jared Marino chipped in a goal and dished out two assists while Ayden MacDonald added an empty netter.
Brock led 3-0 after the first period and Berg scored a breakaway goal just 48 seconds into the second, which would stand as the game winner.
"I remember their defenceman fumbled the puck at the blue line and I was able to poke it," said Berg. "Had a bit of space, but felt a guy in my back pocket the entire way down the ice. Got to the net and brought it to my backhand and was fortunate enough for it to go in."
Windsor's Brennan Feasey scored back-to-back goals and Bryce Yetman scored a power-play goal to bring the Lancers within a goal, however Marino's and MacDonald's late-game markers put the game out of reach for the home side.
Frankie Pucci, Jordan Sambrook and Christian Girhiny each tallied two assists.
Cole Thiessen and Justin Brack each collected an assist.
Windsor narrowly outshot Brock 32-31.
Up next, the Badgers host Game 2 at Seymour-Hannah Arena in St. Catharines on Friday, Feb. 14. Puck drop is 7:15 p.m. Tickets are here.
