Badgers run into foul trouble, lose close match with Lancers

The Brock women's soccer team played inspiring defence during a 1-0 loss to the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Field on Friday, Oct. 1.

Brock ran into foul trouble throughout the match as Windsor midfielder Elizabeth Elliot made them pay when she capitalized on a penalty kick for the game's lone goal late in the first half.

The Badgers strung together many creative attacks but couldn't find a connection through the Lancers defenders.

"We have to make the most of it out there. We made one mistake on the penalty, but this team needs to clean up its ability to play in the attacking third. That is deep in their end," said head coach John Di Pasquale. "We let them off the hook, especially in the first 20 minutes. We have to develop that killer instinct."

Juliana Andolina led the attack with three shots while Cassandra Campanella, Sabrina Bisante, Luisa Argento de Almeida, Erica D'Alesio and Arnelle Douglas each added a shot.

Defender Emily Cirone made her regular-season debut after sitting out the first two matches with an injury. Cirone and fellow defender Mia Di Pasquale shined with defensive prowess.

"We got some bodies back. Emily Cirone is back in the lineup from injury, and she was fantastic," Di Pasquale said. "Emily and Mia looked like the Great Wall of Brock. It was fantastic."

Overall, Di Pasquale was encouraged by his team's overall defensive improvement over their first two losses against Western to start the campaign.

"Defensively, it was much better. Windsor is a gritty team. I watched them on film, and I was petrified about the way they play with their athleticism," he said. "We held our own."

Second-year goalkeeper Isabelle Newkirk made the start in net and finished with seven saves.

Next, the Badgers (0-3) will look to capture their first win when they face the Lancers (1-1-1) in Windsor on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
