Women's Hockey: Captain Colonna nets OT winner

Captain Kaitlyn Colonna scored her first goal of the season to lift the Brock women's hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory versus the Western Mustangs at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Sunday, Nov. 21.

Colonna, a fourth-year defenceman, scored the game-winner at the three-minute mark of overtime.

After Rebekah Feld drove the puck into the Western zone, the Badgers maintained possession as Emma Irwin found Colonna, who shook off an aggressive defender with solid skating.

"Emma gave me a great pass," Colonna said. "I felt pressure by Western, which knocked me onto my knees, but I was able to recover and keep control of the puck. I credit all the work we do with our skating coach Mike Macdonald of TrueStride that helped me make that play happen."

Colonna beat the Western netminder far glove side for the win.

After a scoreless first period, the Mustangs scored a power-play goal late in the second. However, Brock's Allison Stevenson replied with the game-tying goal just three minutes later for her first career Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goal.

"Our team worked hard to support each other and stay positive throughout the game," Colonna said. "We were most successful when we moved the puck and used our speed to get past Western's defence, as you can see from Allison Stevenson's goal, which got the team fired up."

Brock goaltender Aline Hironaka earned the win with 16 saves.

Cassidy Maplethorpe earned an assist on Stevenson's goal. Maplethorpe leads the Badgers in scoring with five goals and seven points in six games. She's currently third in OUA scoring.

Next, the Badgers (5-1-0) host the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday, Nov. 25, at Seymour-Hannah Arena. The puck drop is at 7:15 p.m. Get your tickets here.
