Robinson, Badgers spoil Golden Hawks' home opener

Mackenzie Robinson dropped 19 points, and the Brock women's basketball team clipped the Laurier Golden Hawks 83-67 to spoil the Waterloo-based university's home opener on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Robinson added seven rebounds and two assists while connecting on three three-point shots. The senior forward also went six-for-eight from the free-throw line.

"I felt confident shooting the ball," Robinson said. "I never look to shoot first, but my teammates consistently remind me that they have faith in my ability and that those shots are going to drop, so that was the difference in my game today."

Samantha Keltos and Madalyn Weinert each recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game.

A fifth-year forward, Keltos scored 18 points and led Brock with 11 rebounds. Weinert, a first-year guard, secured 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The duo combined for three blocks and three steals.

Laurier won the first quarter 19-15 until Brock's offence went off for 24 points in the second. The Badgers carried a 39-33 lead into halftime.

"This team does a great job of supporting one another," added Robinson. "It doesn't matter who scores. Instead, observers will see us hyped up and excited for all of our teammates."

Ivana Twumasi registered 11 points, and Victoria Lawrence chipped in eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Badgers shot 43 per cent (28-for-64) and made 10 three-pointers. Brock held Laurier to 37 per cent (25-67) shooting.

The starting lineup consisted of Lawrence, Weinert, Robinson, Keltos and Jenneke Pilling.

Next, the Badgers (2-0) travel to Thunder Bay for back-to-back road games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves (0-2) on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13. Both games start at 6 p.m.
