Experience points for young Badgers squad

The Brock women's rugby team lost 50-0 to the No. 3 nationally-ranked Queen's Gaels at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The Badgers are fielding a young squad this season as this was the first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) match for 18 of their players.

"Today was excellent to gain experience to play under extreme pressure," said head coach Mark Smerdon. "Our first game of the season, in the pouring rain, against a top-ranked team like Queen's, made life difficult for us. However, we dared to put the kicks in."

At halftime, the Badgers emphasized a mindset in tackling with unrelenting defence.

"In the first half, we showed some tentativeness, so we challenged them to use their footwork and get the shoulders on in the second half.

Brock named Megan Dyer their Woman of the Match. Dyer, a first-year flanker from Trenton studying Critical Criminology, completed impact tackles and provided stout defence.

"I knew Megan was good, but she showed us some unbelievable play today," Smerdon said. "The future is bright.

Next, the Badgers (0-1) visit Guelph to battle the Gryphons (1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.

"Playing the top two teams in our division right upfront of our schedule is going to be good for us moving forward," added Smerdon. "It's going to help our players learn what we're doing wrong pretty quickly and what we need to work on."
