ST CATHARINES – In the final regular season match, the Brock Badgers men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw with the No. 1 nationally ranked York Lions.
Brock finishes with a 4-3-5 record and depending on further results from this final weekend of the regular season can place either fifth or sixth in the OUA West, qualifying them for the playoffs.
The Badgers have been defensive juggernauts this season, conceding just five goals in 12 matches, including an eighth clean sheet of the season with the 0-0 draw versus the No. 1 offence in the OUA in the Lions.
Despite the lack of scoring in the Friday night contest, there was no shortage of opportunities for either side. Late in the first half, veteran Badgers midfielder
Michael Fernandez nearly converted on a free kick as the ball just skipped past the left post. Just past the 50
th minute on the other end of the pitch York nearly broke the deadlock with a clear chance on goal but Brock defender
Victor Kariuki was quick to the ball and cleared the line. With the clock continuing to count down, Badgers forward
Luca Danesi took a long chance on goal in the 80
th but missed just right of the net, seeing the game keep its 0-0 score.
Prior to kick off, the Badgers also took the opportunity at the final home match of the season to honour their graduating seniors including Fernandez, Kariuki,
Sean Darracott,
Stuart Loop, and
Christian Ferraro.
With playoff seeding still to be finalized with the results of the closing weekend of the regular season, the Badgers will keep an eye on the scoreboards. OUA playoffs are schedule to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 26 with Brock likely to be on the road as a fifth or sixth seed. A full playoff schedule will be confirmed following the last matches of the season.
