Badgers stay fresh competing at Laval Invitational

QUEBEC CITY – Traveling to Quebec to compete at the Laval Invitational during the winter break, the Brock Badgers men's volleyball team kept themselves fresh ahead of the start of the second half of the OUA season in the new year.

Brock began the exhibition tournament versus the host Laval Rouge et Or, falling in straight sets 23-25, 27-29, 16-25. Sauli Lianga tallied a team-high 14 points in the opener with 12 kills and two service aces, while setter Grant Reddon finished with 23 assists and seven digs defensively.

The Badgers followed that with a four set victory over the Manitoba Bison winning 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19. Devin Cooney was the team leader in the victory over the Canada West opponent registering 17.5 points from 15 kills, two aces, and one block assist. Reddon once again guided the offence with 33 assists, while Cooney topped all Badgers with eight digs.

In their third match of the invitational Brock dropped an exciting five set contest versus the Queen's Gaels 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 12-15. Four Bagders players reached double-digit points in the match led by a 19 point outing for Cooney who tallied 16 kills, two aces, and two block assists. Setter Nolan Shapcott recorded 38 assists, while Nanle Yusuf topped the team defensively with seven digs.

Competing in their fourth and final match once again versus the Bison, Brock fell in straight sets 18-25, 17-25, 23-25. Cooney registered a team-high for the third time with eight points from eight kills. Reddon added 21 assist to his tournament total, while also topping the squad with eight digs.

The Badgers next return home to begin the second half of the OUA season on Saturday, Jan. 7 welcoming the Nipissing Lakers to Bob Davis Gymnasium. First serve in the new year is set for 3 p.m.
