Career night by Pilling sparks No. 3 Badgers

The No. 3 Brock women's basketball team won their return to the Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Sam Keltos scored a season-high 24 points and Jenneke Pilling posted a career-high 14 points as the Badgers defeated the McMaster Marauders 67-54 in an empty gym as Brock University gradually phases in operations for a safe return to campus.

"It was even more amazing to win because we had to pump ourselves up and bring the energy that our fans usually help give us," Pilling said. "We're excited to have them back supporting us next week."

Brock is adjusting capacity limits for its varsity home games following this week's announcement by the Province of Ontario.

"It felt surreal with no fans, but we understand why the measures are in place," said head coach Mike Rao. "Although it made for a flat atmosphere, I was encouraged to see our women remained focused and bring the energy we needed to beat an excellent McMaster team."

After McMaster edged Brock in the first quarter by two points, the Badgers carried a 36-33 lead into halftime.

The Badgers proved to be too much in the third as they pulled away with a 57-43 lead.

Brock managed to limit the Ontario University Athletics' leading scorer, Sarah Gates, in the second half, but the Marauders held the Badgers scoreless for almost the entire fourth quarter as Brock's 14-point lead evaporated.

Pilling, who dished out six assists, connected with Keltos on several late-quarter layups to silence the Marauders, including several free throws from Victoria Lawrence, who finished the night with 11 points, six rebounds, a block and a steal.

Pilling and Keltos combined for 17 rebounds. Ivana Twumasi tallied 12 points, and Mackenzie Robinson secured eight boards.

"Jenneke brought some energy to the floor tonight, Sam obviously, and Victoria Lawrence gave us good minutes," added Rao. "I was also thrilled with Madison MacInnis' play. She was tough to play against."

Up next, the first-place Badgers (9-0) travel to Hamilton on Saturday, Feb. 19, for a rematch with the Marauders (6-3) at 1 p.m. Livestream the game on OUA.tv.
