Record-tying Badgers women's volleyball team headed to nationals

The No. 2 Brock women's volleyball team is heading to the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships for a second consecutive season.

The Badgers outlasted the Western Mustangs 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-17) in front of a jam-packed crowd during the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semifinal at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 16.

The Badgers automatically punched their ticket to the national championships by advancing to the conference final, the Quigley Cup, which they will host on Saturday, March 19 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7 p.m.

In 2020, Brock reached the national championships for the first time in school history. However, the tournament was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic a day before Brock was scheduled to compete.

"It was important for us to get back there because we never got to step on the court last time. Now we will," said head coach Steve Delaney. "Brock has never played at nationals before, but now we get the opportunity to do that."

With Wednesday's win, the Badgers tie a team record 15-0 win streak which dates back to the 1989-90 season.

The Badgers offence was led by first-year outside hitter Emily Foest, who scored nine kills, while Grace Pyatt and Sadie Dick each tallied eight kills.

Middle Christina Jovetic led all hitters in efficiency with seven kills on 12 swings for a blistering .583 hitting percentage.

Setter Sara Rohr dished out 31 assists and made seven digs.

"We worked our tails off every single day to get to this moment. We've overcome a lot of adversity," said Rohr, a third-year Physical Education student from Milton. "It means the world to all of us to work our way back to nationals. This is a special group of women."

The Brock defence was led by Pyatt, who posted a game-high four blocks and Aleiah Torres with double-digit digs, 13. The second-year libero has recorded double-digit digs for all but one game this season.
