No. 1 Badgers prevail over Marauders, advance to OUA semis

The No. 1 Brock women's basketball team opened the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Critelli Cup playoffs with a victory at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, March 19.

The Badgers, who haven't played for three weeks, defeated the McMaster Marauders 49-45 in their OUA quarter-final.

"We overcame a lot. We didn't make a lot of shots or move the ball nearly as well as we should have, but they found a way defensively to win it," said head coach Mike Rao. "From that aspect, I'm proud of these women."

Brock had a balanced scoring attack as three players, Jenneke Pilling, Victoria Lawrence and Kaley DeMont, scored nine points.

Ivana Twumasi and Mackenzie Robinson each added eight.

The weight of this victory meant a difference for Twumasi, whose father recently passed away.

"This win meant everything to me. I pushed through, trying to show up for my team, and we won," said Twumasi, who wore knee taping with 'Dad' written on it. "I was thinking about my dad a lot before the game. I wore this as a reminder that this is going to be a tough game win, or lose."

After trailing 25-23 at halftime, DeMont entered the game and hit three consecutive three-pointers in the third quarter as Brock outscored McMaster 18-8.

"I was in the zone and I don't even remember where I shot from on the court," said DeMont, a first-year guard. "It was an adrenaline rush. We showed everyone today that Brock Badgers plays team basketball."

The Badgers controlled the game early but fell behind and trailed by five in the third. Brock outrebounded McMaster 48-37.

For McMaster, Amy Stinson led the Marauders in scoring with 13 points.

Brock celebrated its senior players by honouring Mackenzie Robinson, Meagan Charbonneau, Jenneke Pilling, and student therapist Tamar Kritzer during a pre-game ceremony.

Next, the Badgers will host the Western Mustangs on Wednesday, March 23 in the OUA semifinal at 6 p.m.
