Brock Badgers to host Wilson Cup for first time in 17 years

The Brock Badgers are hosting the Wilson Cup for the first time in 17 years.

The No. 4 Badgers ousted the No. 10 McMaster Marauders 88-75 during the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semifinal at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 23.

The win earned Brock the right to host the OUA Men's Basketball Championship for the first time since 2005 and punch its ticket to the U SPORTS national championships in Edmonton, Alberta from April 1-3.

In the other OUA semifinal, No. 9 Queen's overcame No. 1 Carleton in Ottawa 86-80 to end the Ravens' appearance at the Wilson Cup for the first time in 16 years.

"This means a lot, I'm happy for everyone on the team and all the coaches," said senior forward Tajinder Lall, who scored 21 points. "We're looking forward to a good nationals."

On Saturday, March 26, Brock will host Queen's at Bob Davis Gymnasium in the OUA Men's Basketball Championships for the first time since 2005.

The last, and only, time Brock won the provincial conference championship was during the 1991-92 season when Brock defeated Concordia 111-87 in Waterloo.

Head coach Willy Manigat said his team draws strength by playing in the present.

"Because we don't think of anything as big moments, we just focus on the current moment, every possession matters, every practice matters, every rep matters, whether that's five-on-five or five on zero, that's been our message all year," he said. "Our message is about staying locked into every moment. There was no nervous energy because we were just treating this like any other game, we wanted to put our best foot forward and play Brock Basketball."

The Badgers came out flying in the first half as they outscored McMaster 22-16 in the first quarter and then 25-13 in the second to carry a 57-29 lead into halftime.

The Marauders made a late push in the fourth by outscoring the Badgers 28-18 to no avail.

Jordan Tchuente recorded a career-high 22 points to lead the Brock offence. Godsman Kwakwah added 17 points while Jordan Henry led McMaster with 16.

The Badgers were a force offensively, leading in all major team statistics including field goal percentage (47.1-41.4), three-point shooting (36-19.4), free-throws (88.2-45.8), and offensive rebounds (12-7).

The Badgers also got the job done defensively leading in rebounds (48-29), and blocks (3-2).

"Tomorrow is our championship in practice, practicing to be the best versions of ourselves," added Manigat. "Saturday, we bring on the game and go from there."
