No. 2 Badgers aiming for No. 1 in Calgary

The Brock women's volleyball team took to the court for its first practice as they make a triumphant return to the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships in Calgary, Alberta Thursday, March 24.

Stepping back into University of Calgary's natural-light-filled Jack Simpson Gymnasium brought a flood of memories for some Badgers.

It was at this same facility in March 2020 that Brock's coaches and student-athletes had their hearts broken after reaching the U SPORTS tournament for the first time in program history, only to have competition cancelled the night before it started because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This time around, the Badgers are looking for a storybook ending.

"It honestly feels like we never left. We battled through the OUA to rightfully earn our spot back here and have the chance to compete for the national title," said third-year middle Christina Jovetic. "We know it won't be easy, but we're more than ready for these moments."

Head coach Steve Delaney recalled that fateful night two years ago.

"Telling them they wouldn't be able to compete was one of the toughest things I've had to do," said Delaney. "We had parents in the air coming from Toronto on their way to see their daughters compete. When they got here, they had to turn around and go back. It was awful. We never got to step on the court last time. Now we will."

The Badgers enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and will open competition against the No. 7 Mount Royal Cougars on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. EST.

Brock was the No. 7 seed in 2020, but returns to the championships stronger than ever with a provincial banner in tow. The Badgers set a new team win streak record after going 16-0 and clinched their first-ever OUA Women's Volleyball Championship after beating the Toronto Varsity Blues at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, March 19.

"Now that we're past being afraid of getting shut down for COVID, we're able to focus on volleyball and focus on what we came here to do, which is to win each game we have the opportunity to play," said Brock libero Alanna Norris. "We're here to make a name for ourselves and continue on with our awesome season. It has been a whole team effort and there's been ups and downs, but we've persevered through all of it."
