Badgers’ run ends at U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championships

There was heartbreak and there were tears as the Brock Badgers women's hockey team was eliminated from the 2022 U SPORTS national championships Saturday, March 26.

The reigning Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships were knocked out of contention for a consolation title with a 2-0 loss to the hosting University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.

With an 0-2 record in Charlottetown, it brings to an end the Badgers' U SPORTS run, but has opened the team's eyes to what is possible for this Brock program, said head coach Margot Page.

"The kids are really emotional because they're proud and they came out here to win," she said. "But they know they've done such a great job this year going past what everyone thought we could do.

"For our seniors, they got to experience this rather than watching it from home and for the younger players, they now want to come back and win games. They've learned what it's all about. It's a hard competition.

Playing in the consolation semifinal, Brock faced a determined UPEI team in front of its home crowd at Maclauchlan Arena. There was no scoring until the 12:48 mark of the second period when Jolena Gillard scored while the Panthers were on a powerplay. It remained at 1-0 until late in the third when Gillard scored again and put the game out of reach.

Brock had plenty of chances, outshooting UPEI 30-18, but they couldn't solve Panthers goalie Camille Scherger.

"It just wasn't there today," said Page. "We had our opportunities but it just didn't happen. You can't define your season based on these two games. You have to look at the big picture of what we accomplished.

"I always say win or lose, you're always going to learn, so that's what you have to learn from this experience."
