Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Stephen Leithwood

Season to remember for Brock women’s volleyball team

The best season in Brock women's volleyball history came to an end on Sunday, March 27.

The Badgers' unforgettable 17-2 campaign concluded on the national stage in the consolation final at the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships in Calgary, Alberta.

In a battle for fifth-place, No. 2 Brock lost 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 26-28, 12-25) to the No. 4 Toronto Varsity Blues at University of Calgary's Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

First-year outside hitter Madison Chimienti collected five kills to power the Badgers to win the first set with some of their best hitting of the tournament (.353).

Brock kept the score close through the next two sets before Toronto pulled away in the fourth.

"It's tough to lose our last match of the season. We got a little unglued at times with some of our decision-making," said head coach Steve Delaney. "We got tight when we had opportunities to win the set. The good news is that we had chances to win every set, but the last one."

Grace Pyatt and Sadie Dick block a Toronto attack at U SPORTS in Calgary.

Chimienti finished with a total of 14 kills, her 10th double-digit kill game of the season. Senior middle Grace Pyatt and Emily Foest each added nine kills. Foest led the Badgers with 12 digs as Pyatt led with five blocks.

A pair of third-year team leaders enjoyed one of the best campaigns of their careers: setter Sara Rohr and middle Christina Jovetic.

Rohr was named Brock's Top Performer following the consolation final. She recorded her sixth 40-plus assist game of the season (42).

A Physical Education student from Milton, Rohr was awarded OUA First-Team All-Star honours as she quarterbacked the Badgers to the best offence in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) as they led in kills (598), assists (550), and points (762).

"I'm proud of our team this year. There are a lot of unforgettable moments. We have a lot of first-year players who have the opportunity to soak up this experience," Rohr said. "We're going to keep growing, keep building upon history. We're going to be right back here on the national stage next season."

Jovetic, a Kinesiology student, enjoyed one of the best seasons of her career as a Badger. The 6-foot-3 middle from Niagara Falls consistently filled the scoresheet on attack and defence.

She scorched the floor with a .324 kill percentage and was among the league leaders with 41 total blocks.

"Regardless of the outcome today. I'm proud of everything that we've done this year," Jovetic said. "From what we did at the start of the season until we pushed right to the end of this game. It's been an amazing season, and I wouldn't change any of it for the world."

It was a historic season for the Brock women's volleyball team.

The Badgers overcame erratic training and regular season schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic en route to clinching their first OUA Championship title in program history while setting a new win streak record of 16 consecutive victories.

They climbed as high as No. 2 in the national weekly Top 10 rankings before reaching the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships for a second consecutive season to compete on the national stage for the first time after their first trip was cancelled at the start of the pandemic.

"Every player coming in next year we'll reap the expectations and rewards of the work we've instilled from this year, and the history that we made," added Jovetic. "The hard work is starting to pay off."

Delaney was awarded the OUA West Coach of the Year and then the U SPORTS Coach of the Year.

"We can celebrate and reflect on our season," Delaney said. "I want our players to take away a lot of positive moments, but that's the easy part. We want them to focus on the learning piece as student-athletes, because we have to improve mentally, physically and technically, so we can play at the level of volleyball of the Canada West conference."
