U SPORTS win sets up Brock/Ryerson rematch in women’s basketball

The Brock Badgers will get another shot at the Ryerson Rams.

The No. 4 Badgers opened the U SPORTS Women's Basketball National Championships with an 85-74 win over the No. 5 Acadia Axewomen in the quarter-finals at Queen's University Thursday, March 31

That moves the Badgers into the semifinal round against the Rams on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m., exactly one week after Ryerson erased a 22-point deficit to beat Brock at Bob Davis Gymnasium in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Critelli Cup championship game.

"Honestly we're more than excited. I feel like all week we've been feeling like we want another chance to prove ourselves and showcase what we actually can do," said third-year guard Ivana Twumasi. "It's great we made it to the final four, but even better because we get another shot at Ryerson."

The Psychology student scored 20 points including a trio of three-pointers to lead the high-scoring Badgers to victory.

Brock showed once again that they play better as a team unit than as individuals with eight players getting on the board and four scoring 10 or more points. Rookie Madalyn Weinert was named the player of the game for Brock with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the win.

"In addition to wanting another shot at Ryerson, the one thing on our mind all week has been wanting to play for each other," Twumasi said. "The fact we had multiple players in double digits shows we're playing as a team and that's the best way we as a team can be successful."

Both teams came out shooting well in the first half but the Badgers took the early lead thanks to a varied offensive attack led by guard Victoria Lawrence, who came off the bench and led all first-half scorers with 12 points.

The Badgers expanded their 14-point halftime lead to 18 points early in the third, but the Axewomen battled back and went on a 10-0 run to end the frame, leaving the gap at 62-52 going into the fourth.

Acadia continued to make things interesting, shrinking the gap to as few as six points at one point, but Brock hung on to take the 85-74 win.

"We spread the shooting around and moved the ball well, and I think the only time we got in trouble was when the ball stuck," said head coach Mike Rao. "What I'm happiest about is that we didn't fold. We handled the pressure and did a good job with that."

Rao said his team will be ready for another shot at Ryerson Saturday.

"We know where the hole in the dam was and we've fixed it," he said. "We know Ryerson and Ryerson knows us. They're all fifth-year players and we're younger, but we have first-year players who are really contributing. We're going to fight hard."

The second semifinal Saturday be contested between the winners of the other two quarter-final matches Thursday night: No. 2 Saskatchewan against No. 7 Queens; and No. 3 Winnipeg against No. 6 Laval.

After Saturday's semifinals, the bronze medal game will be Sunday at 3 p.m. with the gold medal game set for 6 p.m.
