Tough end to Badgers’ run in Kingston

Home court advantage may have been the difference as the Brock Badgers women's basketball team ran into a tough Queen's Gaels squad Sunday, April 3, ending their hopes for a medal at the U SPORTS National Championships.

Playing in front of the hosting Gaels at the Athletics and Recreation Centre in Kingston, Brock lost 75-57 in the bronze medal game to end their 2021-22 campaign.

Foul trouble early in the game set the tone and forced Brock to make adjustments. In the end, head coach Mike Rao said it was a tough way to go out.

"The game was disappointing, but our kids played with a lot of effort," he said. "There was nothing we could have done differently."

The Gaels came out swinging in the first quarter with four threes and taking an early 26-11 lead.

Brock had an impressive second frame, outscoring the Gaels 18-9 and closing the gap to just two points in the final minute before the hosts extended the lead to 35-30 with another three just before halftime.

From there Queen's continued to pull away, leading 54-42 after three quarters before outscoring Brock 21-12 in the fourth quarter to take the 75-57 win.

The Badgers were led by Ivana Twumasi and Victoria Lawrence with 14 and 13 points, respectively, with Jenneke Pilling and Madalyn Weinert adding six each.
Queen's was led by Isabella Belvedere with 22 points including six three-pointers, as well as Julia Chadwick with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Brock closes out the season with a 15-3 record overall, including a perfect 12-0 run in the regular season. While the fourth-place finish at nationals may not have been the ultimate result the team was hoping for, Rao said there's plenty to be happy about.

"This team recognizes the fact that not a lot of people thought we could get here, so in that respect, it was very fulfilling," he said. "If you would have told me a month ago we would finish fourth, I would have said 'that's a great accomplishment.'"

There's also lots of hope for the future with all players with the exception of forwards Mackenzie Robinson and OUA West MVP Samantha Keltos eligible to return.

"There's always work to be done and I think we have to upgrade a bit and recruit to get a little bit bigger and stronger, but the base is there," said Rao.
