The Brock Badgers women's basketball team hosted the No. 3 Queen's Gaels on Friday, Nov. 24 at Bob Davis Gymnasium where they picked up a huge 80-66 victory.
It was a great team performance from Brock as five players scored 10 or more points. Fourth-year guard
Angeline Campbell led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Olivia Fiorucci totaled 15 points, guards
Madalyn Weinert and
Noor Bazzi contributed 12 each and
Oluwatito Akinnusi tallied 11.
Early on, Queen's imposed themselves on the offensive end, grabbing lots of offensive rebounds and getting good looks at the basket. Bazzi's sharp shooting kept the Badgers close as Queen's led narrowly 17-12 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the pace of play remained high as Queen's desperately tried to pull away, but the Badgers stayed close the whole time. Some nice finishes inside by Weinert and
Ilijana Vukovic kept Brock's offence looking strong as Queen's took a 35-28 lead into the halftime break.
The Badgers came out on fire in the third as Fiorucci and Campbell took over the offence for Brock, erasing the Queen's lead by midway through the frame. A beautiful euro step through the lane from Campbell in the final minute helped give Brock a 55-49 lead heading into the final quarter.
Brock kept the momentum rolling in the fourth, extending their lead to as large as 16 thanks to some great plays by Campbell and Weinert. Queen's was never able to get the Brock lead under 10 after that point and the Badgers cruised to an upset win over the No. 3 Gaels.
Next up, the Badgers (3-3) head to downtown St. Catharines on Saturday, Nov. 25 to host the MacMaster Marauders (5-2) at the Meridian Centre for Paint the Meridian Red with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m, and tickets can be purchased
