Badgers suffer heartbreaking road loss to Golden Hawks

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team dropped a tough 77-75 loss against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Dec. 2 in Waterloo.

Senior guard Jevon Brown had his best game of the season for Brock posting 29 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist. Senior guard Isaiah Bujdoso also had a strong game with 11 points, five assists, five rebounds and one steal.

In this first quarter, points were hard to come by for both teams. Brock clamped down defensively and forced multiple Laurier turnovers to keep the score close despite the Badgers' shooting troubles. The Golden Hawks led 13-11 at the end of the opening frame.

The defensive battle continued into the second, but Brock was able to get their offence rolling a little bit. Brown attacked the basket very well and was the main scoring source for the Badgers, putting up 12 points in the first half. A beautiful step-back jump shot by Bujdoso late in the quarter made it so that the game was tied 28-28 at the halftime break.

The Badgers were able to ignite their offence in the third quarter. A massive dunk from junior forward Jordan Tchuente got the team fired up and led to Brown and Nemanja Sarkanovic hitting three-pointers as Brock established a multple possession lead. Brock scored 27 points in the third compared to 28 in the entire first half, which resulted in them leading 55-46 heading into the fourth.

Brown continued his strong game by extending the Badger lead with a three-pointer and a tough finish at the basket on back-to-back possessions early in the fourth quarter. However, Laurier chipped away at the lead throughout the final frame, with sharp outside shooting and were able to tie the game up in the final minute. Two Golden Hawk free throws in the dying seconds were the difference, as Brock gave up a fourth quarter lead for the second straight game.

Next up, the Badgers (4-5) will return from the winter break to host the TMU Bold (6-4) at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
