The Brock Badgers women's basketball team lost in nail-biting fashion 61-60 against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Waterloo.
Junior guard
Madalyn Weinert carried the load offensively in this contest, posting 23 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Weinert currently leads the province in scoring at 19.3 points per game. Graduate student and guard
Noor Bazzi also had a strong game with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Brock got out to a fast start thanks to some hot shooting. Bazzi,
Olivia Fiorucci and
Angeline Campbell all connected on three-pointers in the opening frame helping the Badgers establish an early lead. Brock led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Badgers continued to score the ball efficiently with Weinert and
Oluwatito Akinnusi dominating the paint on offence. Brock did a great job grabbing offensive rebounds, which gave them extra possessions and helped them hold a 38-31 lead at halftime.
Out of the halftime break, Brock started to struggle converting on offence and Laurier suddenly got scorching hot from the outside. The Golden Hawks were also able to force many Brock turnovers in the third which helped them erase their deficit. Laurier went into the fourth quarter leading 51-50.
In the final quarter, both teams turned up the intensity on defence and points became hard to come by for either side. Laurier opened up an eight-point lead with just over three minutes left to go, but Weinert scored seven straight points for the Badgers to cut the deficit to one with under a minute on the clock. However, Brock's final possessions came up empty and Laurier held on for the win.
Next up, the Badgers (5-4) will return home from the winter break on Friday, Jan. 5 to take on the TMU Bold (10-0) at Bob Davis Gymnasium at 6 p.m. You can watch the action OUA.tv.
