Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Theo Wan

Iantomasi scores a pair of goals to lift Badgers past Thunderbirds

The Brock Badgers men's soccer team earned their fifth win of the 2023 season, shutting out the Algoma Thunderbirds by a score of 2-0 on Saturday (Sept. 30).

Fifth-year striker Marc Iantomasi scored his fourth goal of the season in the 17th minute to give the Badgers a 1-0 advantage. Right before the first half concluded, the Badgers added one more as Inatomasi added his second of the game. In the first 45 minutes, Brock put up five shots on net.

The second half saw the Badgers have numerous chances in the last third, including third-year striker Michael Solomon, who just missed a goal after hitting the right post. The Badgers kept the pressure on and took the game by a score of 2-0.

Eight yellow cards were carded in the contest, with four coming from each side.

Third-year Calum Morrison got the start in net and made three saves for his first win and clean sheet of his OUA career.

The back line continues to be strong for the Badgers, with excellent performances coming from the two centre-backs Luca Ragagnin and Conrad Czarnecki. First-year midfielder Noah Geyer came on in the 57th minute and helped, changed the complexion of the contest, creating numerous opportunities for his teammates.

Head coach Aleks Balta reflected on the win after the match.

"We found a goal early off of good pressure and we did create a lot of opportunities. Hopefully, we put those away tomorrow, so that we can kill off the game earlier. Algoma was really physical, and they were very competitive, so we're going to have to win the battles when we play them again tomorrow."

As part of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, both teams wore orange shirts in warmup and took a moment of silence before the contest to remember and honour the victims and survivors of Canadian residential schools.

Up next, the Badgers (5-2-0) stay at home to take on this same Algoma Thunderbirds team (0-5-3) on Sunday (Oct. 1). Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. at Brock Alumni Field.
