The Brock Badgers travelled to Toronto on Wednesday, Jan 10, to take on the York Lions and left victorious, following a commanding 5-1 performance.
First-year forward Riley Gannon and fifth-year winger Jared Marino led the way for the Badgers, both recording a goal and an assist, to help the Badgers stay atop of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division and the league. Third-year forward Jacob Roach finished with two assists, putting his season total up to 19, which places him second in the OUA.
Mario Peccia made his first start of the year between the pipes and recorded 17 saves for his first victory of the 2023/24 OUA season.
After a back and forth first period of play, the Badgers were able to break the deadlock at 18:05. On their third power-play of the game, third-year centre Tyler Burnie redirected a slapshot from the point by Justin Brack right by the Lions' goaltender for his 13th of the season.
The seesaw action continued in the second frame, with both the Badgers and the Lions trading hits, penalties, shots, and saves but the score remained the same after 40 minutes of play.
The Lions opened the scoring 17 seconds in to the third period, but it didn't take long for the Badgers to respond. Just under three minutes later, first-year defenceman Jonah Boria took the puck down the ice with a beautiful solo effort before finding Gannon in the slot, who buried home his fifth of the year. This opened the floodgates for the Badgers, as they would go on to score three more unanswered goals from Cole Tymkin, Zach Taylor and Marino.
Up next, the Badgers (16-5-0) will defend their undefeated streak on home ice as they take on the visiting UQTR Patriotes (14-5-0) on Saturday, Jan, 13 at 2 p.m. at Canada Games Park. Purchase your tickets at https://brocku.universitytickets.com/. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
