The Brock Badgers women's basketball team travelled to Guelph on Friday, Jan. 13, where they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 63-58.
This marks the Badgers' fourth consecutive victory and an undefeated run so far in 2024.
Junior guard
Madalyn Weinert continued her dominant season with another incredible performance. The St. Catharines product totaled 30 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. Weinert currently leads the province in scoring at 20.8 points per game.
The Badgers got out to a lead early by moving the ball well and creating open shots right away.
Oluwatito Akinnusi and
Noor Bazzi both hit multiple jump shots in the quarter, helping establish a 15-11 lead heading into the second.
The second quarter was very back and forth as the teams kept within a possession of each other for the majority of the frame. Weinert took over the Brock offence in the second, getting to the basket and foul line with ease on route to her 13 first half points. The Badgers held a narrow 27-25 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the halftime break the Badgers' offence slowed down a little bit as they struggled to get open looks. A few Brock turnovers allowed the Gryphons to take the lead but Brock battled hard and always stayed within a couple baskets. Guelph entered the fourth quarter leading 42-38.
Neither team was able to create a comfortable lead in the final quarter. Weinert and
Angeline Campbell carried the Brock offence in the frame with Campbell hitting a couple three-pointers and Weinert scoring from everywhere on the court. Some clutch free-throw shooting from Bazzi and
Olivia Fiorucci secured the win for Brock.
Next up, the Badgers (9-4) will travel to Toronto for a matchup against the York Lions (2-11) on Friday, Jan. 19, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. You can catch the game on OUA.tv.
