The Brock Badgers women's basketball team is still undefeated in 2024, as they took the second game of a weekend series against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, Jan. 27 by a score of 77-72.
This was the Badgers' eighth win in a row as they continue to lead the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Central Division.
Junior guard
Madalyn Weinert followed up her incredible performance last night with another huge game. The St. Catharines product had her second straight 30-point game with a season-high 34 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Weinert currently leads the OUA in scoring with 22.1 points per game and also surpassed 1,000 points scored in her OUA career (regular season and playoffs).
Oluwatito Akinnusi also had a strong game, posting a near triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
Lakehead came out on fire looking hungry to avenge their loss from the previous night. The Thunderwolves hit a couple of threes to open up a multiple-possession lead early as the Badgers were struggling to hit their shots. First-year forward
Vienna Vercesi provided a little bit of a spark toward the end of the quarter with back-to-back buckets to bring Brock within shouting distance. Lakehead led 21-14 at the end of the frame.
In the second quarter, Weinert took over for the Badgers offence, bringing them right back into the game with a three-pointer and converting multiple fast-break opportunities en route to her 16 first-half points. A big three-pointer from
Allison Addy in the dying seconds of the half brought the Badgers to within one as Lakehead led 34-33 at the break.
The third quarter was very back and forth as the Badgers kept coming very close to taking the lead, only for the Thunderwolves to score and keep themselves marginally ahead. Weinert and Akinnusi were strong offensively for Brock keeping the game close heading into the fourth. Lakehead led 56-53 with 10 minutes left to play.
Brock gained a comfortable lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter thanks to some sharp shooting from Weinert and Addy. Offensive momentum carried on throughout the rest of the quarter as
Olivia Fiorucci and Akinnusi controlled the game in the paint and kept the Badgers ahead. A late push from the Thunderwolves was not enough as the Badgers came away with the hard-fought win.
Next up, the Badgers (13-4) return home to take on the Windsor Lancers (9-7) on Friday, Feb. 2, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bob Davis Gymnasium. You can purchase your tickets at
