Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Theo Wan

McKenna's career-high 21 points not enough as Badgers fall to Varsity Blues

On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Brock Badgers men's basketball team dropped a 94-83 decision to the home Toronto Varsity Blues.

Freshman guard/forward Andrew McKenna had his best game in a Badger uniform, notching a career-high 21 points, with three rebounds and one steal. Two other Badgers also ended in double digits in Jordan Tchuente and Davanté Hackett, who both had 15 each. Tchuenete led the team with nine rebounds and four assists.

The first quarter started with some silky shooting from Kevaughn Ellis, who hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Badgers to go up 8-5. Toronto reversed the momentum in the middle of the first quarter, going on an 8-0 run to go up 18-12. The Varsity Blues kept their pressure going, as they ended the quarter with a 26-18 lead.

Toronto kept attacking Brock from the three-point line, as Calum Baker hit two in the early stages to give the Blues a nine-point advantage. Much like last night's contest, the Badgers kept chipping away, reducing the lead to just 37-34, as aggressive offence from McKenna and Tchuente resulted in two made free throws a piece. A late layup from U of T extended their lead to eight at the halftime break.

Midway through the third, Ellis nailed a key three-pointer to reduce the Toronto lead to 12. A Tchuente three-pointer and McKenna layup brought the game within reach as they were down seven after thirty minutes of play. The Badgers shot stronger from the long distance, nailing four out of six for a 66.7 three-point shooting percentage.

The game kept grinding to a halt, as there were a total of 15 foul calls throughout the fourth quarter. Brock made Toronto's lead go down to just five with 3:46 left off a couple made free throws from Isaiah Bujdoso and Hackett. A 14-8 run from the Varsity Blues closed out the game as they came away with the victory.

Up next, Brock (5-6) welcomes the Algoma Thunderbirds (1-9) on Friday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. Catch the action on OUA.tv.
