Liam Riley (Branchton, ON) of the baseball team and Casey Kenney (St. Catharines, ON) of the women's golf team have been named the Brock University Athletes for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 6.
After dropping the first two games of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Regional Qualifier, Riley and the Badgers rebounded with two consecutive victories to book their ticket to the provincial championship. In a thrilling 8-6 extra innings victory over the McMaster Marauders in the semifinal, the first-year infielder notched a triple that brought home the go-ahead run in the tenth inning, and he scored the eighth and final run of the game on a wild pitch. In the final against the Guelph Gryphons, Riley delivered three singles and one run batted in (RBI) while scoring two runs. Over the weekend, he had seven hits in 19 at bats and had a total of nine RBI as well as a 1.113 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
In a program-defining result, Kenney captured a bronze medal at the 2024 OUA Women's Golf Championship in Windsor. Earning a total score of 151 (+9), Kenney tied with both Kristi Godkin of the Laurier Golden Hawks and Kira Turner of the Western Mustangs for third place. The Physical Education major shot a 74 on Day 1 and a 77 on Day 2. For all of her efforts over the weekend, Kenney was named an OUA First Team All-Star. The Badgers as a team finished sixth in 2024 after placing tenth a year ago and Kenney's performance was a big reason why.
