Badgers push No. 4 Gaels to the brink

Brock fell just short in its home opener.

The Brock Badgers men's volleyball team competed well in a 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 13-15) defeat to the No. 4 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels on Friday, Nov. 1 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Devin Cooney led the Badgers in points with 18.5, recording 16 kills, two aces and 0.5 blocks while Adam Shapcott recorded a team-high 36 assists and seven digs in the contest.

First-year outside hitter Lucas Bouwers recorded his first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) kill in the game.

Brock stormed out to a 17-9 lead in the first set courtesy of back-to-back kills from third-year outside hitter KJ Robinson, ultimately taking it 25-18. The Badgers hit at a .381 percetange in the frame.

The visiting Gaels eager to claw their way back into the game led by as much as seven points in the second set to win it 25-20.

A service ace from Kylar Code followed by a spike from Cooney encapsulated an outstanding third set for the hosts who took it 25-21 to earn a 2-1 set lead.

Down in the match again, Queen's came up with a needed response in the fourth set, sending it a fifth with a 25-19 win off a kill from Dax Tompkins.

In the fifth and final set, Brock pushed back against Queen's momentum, fighting back from down 14-10 to make it 14-13. A serve error from the Badgers gave the Gaels the fifth set win.

Queen's hit at a .340 clip while Brock delivered a .196 hitting percentage.

Next, the Brock Badgers men's volleyball team play their second game of their weekend doubleheader against the No. 4 Queen's Gaels on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m at Bob Davis Gymnasium. Tickets are available here with the game also being broadcast live on OUA.tv.
