Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Aidan Cvetich

Badgers' winning streak comes to an end against Marauders

On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Brock Badgers women's basketball team was defeated 84-80 in an overtime thriller by the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.

This was the Badgers first loss since Dec. 2, but still currently hold on to the lead in the Ontario University Athletics OUA) Central Division.

Brock saw some great all-around performances in this one by Madalyn Weinert, Oluwatito Akinnusi and Angeline Campbell. Weinert posted 19 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block for her ninth double-double of the season. Akinnusi contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while Campbell added 18 points, nine rebounds five assists and one block.

Brock fell behind early due to some hot three-point shooting from McMaster to start the game. The Badgers were having trouble protecting the ball and had their offence limited by turnovers in the opening frame. Akinnusi and Vienna Vercesi kept the Badgers close by using their physicality to score on the inside and at the free throw line. McMaster led 18-17 heading into the second quarter.

McMaster's strong outside shooting continued into the second as they opened up a multiple possession lead early in the frame. The Badgers stayed determined though, and brought the scoreline close again through some hot shooting of their own. Campbell hit two three-pointers in the quarter and Weinert hit one to bring Brock right back in it as McMaster held a slim 38-35 lead at halftime.

The pace of the game really picked up in the third quarter with both teams flying up-and-down the court, scoring at will. Campbell was doing it all for the Badgers in the third with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and one block in the frame. Some turnovers and missed shots towards the end of the quarter slowed the pace down but Brock remained close down 58-55.

The Badgers were down by a couple possessions for the majority of the fourth quarter, but they turned it on when it mattered most. A 7-0 run late in the game led by Campbell and Weinert erased the McMaster lead with a minute left to play. A clutch layup from Olivia Fiorucci in the dying seconds tied the game again and sent it to overtime tied 73-73.

The Badgers came up just short in overtime, as McMaster hit two three-pointers to give themselves a lead early. Brock was resilient as they kept it close enough to have a shot to tie the game or take the lead in the dying seconds, but their final possession didn't find the mark.

Next up, the Badgers (16-5) return home for their final game of the season to take on the Nipissing Lakers (3-17) on Saturday, Feb. 17, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
