On Saturday, Feb. 17, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to the Western Mustangs on Senior Night at Canada Games Park.
In a back-and-forth first period, the Badgers and Mustangs were both eager to find the opening goal. The visitors fired 12 shots on net while the host Badgers put up seven of their own, but neither could find the equalizer. Western could not score on the lone power-play opportunity of the period and the score remained level at zero.
Kenzie Harmison came up big in the second making 15 saves in the period. About five minutes in, the graduating senior goaltender made a massive blocker save on the Western scoring attempt to keep things deadlocked. The Badgers fired 12 shots of their own in the period but could not solve Western goalkeeper Brooke Vaccari. With their playoff lives on the line, both teams did not give an inch as the score still read 0-0 after 40 minutes.
Western continued to pepper Harmison with numerous shots throughout the frame, but the Smiths Falls, Ont product remained strong. Shots were much lower for both teams as both played tight defensively not wanting to give up the go-ahead marker in the final period. The two squads combined for only 13 in the period compared to 19 in the first and 27 in the second. An extra period was required to determine a victor.
In the overtime period, the Mustangs scored the winner with just 38 seconds into the contest as Elizabeth Gauthier scored off a pass from Adeline Kristoff.
The Badgers celebrated their seniors (left to right: Kara Thomas, Ashley Robitaille, Camie Matteau Rushbrook, Claudia Murphy, Madeline Nicholson, Teeghan Dalby, Kenzie Harmison) in a pre-game ceremony.
The loss puts an end to the Badgers' season as they finish with an 8-14-2-4 record.
