It's on to the next round of the playoffs for the No. 10 seeded Brock Badgers men's basketball team, as they picked up a 70-69 comeback victory over the No. 7 seed Carleton Ravens on Wednesday, Feb. 21 in Ottawa.
With this win, the Badgers eliminated the defending U SPORTS Champions and move on to face the No. 2 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees in the quarter-final round of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Playoffs.
"We had strong defensive effort and won the battle on the rebounds," said head coach
Willy Manigat. "At the end of the day, we knew it was going to be a 12-round fight and who can take the last punch and withstand the most jabs. We were able to keep fighting and do that."
Senior guard
Jevon Brown was huge for the Badgers as he totalled 22 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist.
Jordan Tchuente also had a very strong game, posting 18 points, nine rebounds, three steals, three assists and one block.
"Jevon's second half offensive output and Jordan's work on the glass were key contributors to the victory," Manigat said. "On top of that, you're going to give yourself a chance to win when you're able to limit their best player to two points in the second half."
The game started off at a high pace with both teams coming out hot shooting the ball.
Isaiah Bujdoso and
Xavier Fearon both hit three-pointers to keep pace with the Ravens, who hit four of their own from beyond the arc in the first. The Badgers slowed Carleton's offence down by forcing turnovers as Brock had five steals in the opening frame, which they were able to turn into eight points. Some solid free throw shooting from
Andrew McKenna in the final minute gave the Badgers a slim 19-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second, the physicality from both sides increased as clean looks at the basket became hard to come by. Some missed shots and turnovers from the Badgers gave the Ravens an opportunity to build a multiple possession lead through the three-pointer. Almost half of Carleton's field goal attempts in the first half were of the three-point variety. Brock was doing a good job of regularly getting to the free throw line, but they were struggling to convert and chip away at Carleton's lead. The Ravens led 39-30 at halftime.
The Badgers brought the game close again early in the third. Brown scored multiple times and was supplemented by Tchuente and McKenna hitting three-pointers to bring Brock back into the lead just before the halfway point of the quarter. The Ravens then flipped the script for the rest of the frame as they regained their lead through strong transition play and outside shooting to lead 55-46 heading into the fourth.
The final quarter started very similarly to the third as Brock came out on fire, erasing the majority of Carleton's lead. Bujdoso hit a tough fadeaway mid-range jumper and Brown delivered another three-pointer to force an early Carleton timeout. A massive two-handed dunk from Tchuente followed up by yet another Brown three-pointer gave the Badgers their first multiple possession lead with just under four minutes to go in the game. Carleton kept the game very close into the final minutes, but some clutch free throw shooting from Brock was enough to secure the comeback victory.
Next up, the No. 10 seed Badgers (11-11) will return to the nation's capital on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. to take on the No. 2 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees (19-3). You can catch the game live on
