Badgers come up short against Bold in OUA quarter-final

The Brock Badgers women's basketball team was defeated 73-65 by the TMU Bold in the OUA quarter-final round on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

This loss eliminated the Badgers from the playoffs and was Brock's first loss at home all season.

"It's a little disappointing today but I'm proud of how we finished." said head coach Mike Rao. "It was a good year. Our team played hard and truly came together, and at the end of the day, we lost to really good team."

Madalyn Weinert had a great game in the loss to wrap up her outstanding third season with the Badgers. The St. Catharines native posted 27 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block. Angeline Campbell also had a strong game totalling 21 points, four rebounds and one assist.

The Badgers came out locked in on both ends of the court. Brock got out to a 16-3 lead and all of their offence was coming from two players early. Campbell and Weinert scored all of the Badgers' points in the opening frame with Campbell hitting three from beyond the arc and Weinert scoring multiple times inside. Brock led 18-10 heading into the second quarter.

The momentum for the Badgers carried over into the second as Allison Addy fired up the crowd by opening the frame with a huge block on a three-point attempt that led to a breakaway layup for herself. TMU was able to chip away at the Brock lead throughout the rest of the quarter, as they hit four three-pointers in the second. Some solid free throw shooting from Campbell and Vienna Vercesi kept the Badgers ahead 31-29 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bold quickly took the lead through some strong play on the offensive glass. TMU grabbed five offensive rebounds in the quarter to help bring them ahead. Brock struggled to hit shots in the third but was playing physical to keep things close. Weinert and Oluwatito Akinnusi carried the Badgers' offence, battling inside to score multiple times in the frame. The Bold held a 51-47 lead after three quarters.

Brock quickly took the lead back early in the fourth, as Campbell hit another three-pointer to open the frame and Weinert followed it up with a mid-range jumper on the next possession. The Bold stopped  the Badgers' momentum and regained the advantage through the use of the three-pointer as they hit two in the final quarter to bring their overall game total to nine. TMU then held a comfortable lead for the rest of the contest as Brock pushed hard in the final minutes but couldn't bring the game close enough.
