The Brock Badgers women's hockey team returned home to Canada Games Park on Saturday, Feb. 3, where they picked up an important 3-0 victory against the Queen's Gaels.
With this win, the Badgers move into the final playoff spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division with five games remaining in the regular season.
Senior goaltender
Kenzie Harmison was outstanding between the pipes for Brock in this one. The Smith Falls, Ont native made 38 saves for her third shutout of the season. First-year forward
Randyll Strongman scored two goals, which gives her the lead in the OUA among rookies with seven.
There was very little separating the two teams in the first period as both sides were playing high-intensity defence and limiting quality scoring chances early on. Harmison was sharp in the frame stopping all nine shots she faced. The first period ended tied 0-0.
The Badgers wasted no time breaking the deadlock in the second period. Just over a minute into the frame,
Catriona Cormier fired a beautiful lead pass to spring
Madeline Nicholson on a breakaway. The junior forward made no mistake, going blocker side for her second of the season. Queen's pressured hard the rest of the period to find an equalizer, but Harmison was absolutely dialled in for Brock, making 14 more saves to keep the Badgers ahead 1-0 heading into the third.
In the third period, Brock once again scored very early. Just over two minutes into the frame, Strongman was sprung on a breakaway. The Scarborough product roofed her shot past the glove of Emma Tennant to double the Badgers' advantage. The Gaels could not find an answer, as Harmison remained a brick wall for Brock. She made 15 saves throughout the period, and the Badgers added an empty-net goal on their way to the shutout victory.
Next up, the Badgers (8-10-1-4) head on the road for a matchup against the Waterloo Warriors (12-6-3-2) on Sunday, Feb. 4, with puck-drop scheduled for 2:30 p.m. You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
