Brock alumna Michelle Fazzari’s indomitable spirit shines on and off the mat

Michelle Fazzari's life is a testament to resilience, both on and off the mat.

The Brock University alumna, known for her decorated wrestling career, is courageously battling cancer, inspiring many with her unyielding spirit.

Fazzari (BPhEd '10, BEd '13) was recently inducted into the Wrestling Canada Lutte Hall of Fame during the 2024 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Mississauga. This recognition marks another milestone in a career that has seen her achieve great heights.

At Brock, Fazzari made an immediate impact, being named U SPORTS Rookie of the Year and Outstanding Female Wrestler in 2005-06. She went on to become a three-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) champion.

Her prowess on the mat continued as she represented Canada at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and garnered numerous international accolades, including a World bronze medal in 2017 and a Commonwealth Games silver in 2018.

However, Fazzari's most formidable opponent emerged off the mat.

In December, she publicly shared her cancer diagnosis, detailing her journey through the physical and emotional challenges of treatment.

Despite setbacks, her social media posts journal a spirit undeterred by adversity.

She has divulged the physical toll but also captured the emotional resilience required to face such a relentless disease. Fazzari writes candidly about the ups and downs, the moments of despair, and the steadfast belief that she can overcome the odds.

"My family, as they always do, reassured me that there is always a way," she wrote. "They reminded me of how far I've come since December."

She documents the mix of hope and hardship, from celebrating small victories like being able to walk and breathe unaided, to confronting the heavy news of new tumors.

Fazzari's fight against cancer reflects the determination she showed throughout her wrestling career.

The 2017 Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year has battled through injuries that would sideline most athletes—blown knees, torn muscles, and more—yet her resilience shines brightest in her current struggle. Her narrative is one of a relentless fighter who, despite the toll of treatments, remains hopeful and focused on recovery.

Fellow Brock alumna and teammate, Hannah Taylor (BSM '21), praised Fazzari as one of the most remarkable individuals she has encountered through the sport of wrestling.

"Michelle is one of the most incredible people that wrestling has introduced me to. A warrior on and off the mat, she is an incredible teammate to look up to, and confide in," Taylor said. "Her dedication and success in wrestling has contributed to the success of the entire Brock wrestling team and will continue for the years to come."

In 2021, Fazzari capped her wrestling career with a gold medal at the Matteo Pellicone Tournament. Now, she channels the same tenacity into her battle with cancer.

"Michelle has impacted the lives of many by inspiring athletes to dream big, work hard, be tough, hold others accountable, all while demonstrating humility," added Taylor.

Fazzari has a message for those following her journey:

"Thank you for giving me so much to fight for," she states. "I know there is only one choice, and that is to keep going."
