Badgers trade wins in Sunday showing against Mustangs

The Brock Badgers baseball team split their Sunday series against the Western Mustangs.

A commanding Brock win in the doubleheader opener was followed by a close loss to Western on Sunday, Sept. 22 at George Taylor Field.

Game 1: Brock 5 - 1 Western

Second-year pitcher Jack Tiessen got the start on the rubber and pitched a complete game, giving up four hits while allowing only one earned run. Tiessen walked three batters and struck out eight, earning him his first win of the season.

It was a notable performance from first-year infielder Liam Riley as he finished Game 1 with a team-leading two runs batted in (RBI), two sacrifice flies and a stolen base that led to a run scored.

Brock opened the scoring in the third inning with Riley stealing third and eventually coming in to score on a fielder's choice.

With a 3-1 lead by the fifth inning, the Badgers scored two more runs to seal the game.

Pasco and fifth-year infielder Ashton Feijo each ended the contest with an RBI.

The Badgers ended the game with a lone error in the first inning while the Western Mustangs had two.

Game 2: Brock 3 - 4 Western

Despite holding a 3-1 lead into the final inning, Brock couldn't close the game out.

An error from the Badgers in the fourth inning opened the scoring for the Mustangs.

Brock answered shortly after, scoring three runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead from an RBI-single from Pasco and a two-RBI single from Nolan Phelan

An error and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning allowed the Mustangs to walk off the Badgers with a two-out sacrifice fly.

Third-year pitcher Evan Marks threw five innings, allowing zero walks, a lone hit with two unearned runs and six strikeouts on 68 pitches.

Blake Vidal threw 14 pitches, only getting one out but surrendering no runs while Daniel Lucas pitched in relief and gave up two unearned runs in 1.1 innings of work.

The four team fielding errors hurt the Badgers compared to the Mustangs' two.

Phelan ended the second game with three hits and two RBI in his four plate appearances.

Up next, the Brock Badgers baseball team play their final regular season series away from home at Volunteer Field against the McMaster Marauders on Saturday, Sept. 28, with Game 1 at noon and Game 2 scheduled for 2 p.m.
