The Brock Badgers earned two wins in their season-opening doubleheader against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Brock won the opening game 6-3 and followed that up with a massive 12-3 win in the second game of the day in Brantford on Sunday, Sept. 8.
Game 1: Brock 6 – Laurier 3 (eight innings)
Thanks to an eighth-inning grand slam from Cole Carpenter and single from Tim Somerville, Brock piled on five runs in the extra frame to take the win.
Carpenter recorded two hits and five runs batted in (RBI) in four appearances at the plate.
Laurier tied things up in the bottom of third with a single from Ethan Chaung and put two runs up in the bottom of the eighth.
It was not enough as the Badgers earned their first victory of the season.
Charlie Hughes got the nod for Brock, allowing just five hits and striking out eight batters. The Bond Head, ON product allowed just one walk, earning the win.
Brock was flawless defensively, making no errors in the contest while Laurier recorded one.
Game 2: Brock 12 – Laurier 3
The Badgers completed the sweep on Sunday as they comfortably beat the Golden Hawks in the second game of the double header.
An error from Laurier combined with an Ethan Pasco single made it 3-3 after three innings.
Brock outscored Laurier 9-0 in the next five, cementing their second victory of the year.
Carpenter, Randy Phelan and Flynn Matheson recorded two RBI each while Pasco, Somerville and Ashton Feijo had one.
Drew McArthur earned the win for Brock, striking out a batter and walking none.
Kiva Salzman pitched in relief for Brock, going three innings and giving up just two hits. RJ Moniz also pitched in the win, recording three strikeouts.
The Badgers generated a lot of pressure on the Golden Hawks' pitchers by recording six stolen bases in the 12-3 victory.
Laurier committed three errors to Brock's two.
Next, the Brock Badgers baseball team will face the Guelph Gryphons on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. or at the conclusion of the first game at George Taylor Field. The games have been rescheduled from Sept. 7 postponements.
